Verbena ‘Bonariensis’

Verbena bonariensis, commonly known as Tall Verbena, is a tall, elegant herbaceous perennial valued for its airy form, long flowering season and wildlife-friendly flowers. It is an excellent choice for mixed borders, cottage gardens, prairie-style planting and wildlife-friendly gardens.

The plant develops tall, erect, branching stems that can reach approximately 2 metres in height, carrying sparse, oblong green leaves. Its open structure allows it to add height without creating a heavy or overcrowded appearance, making it particularly effective planted amongst other perennials.

From summer through to autumn, the stems are topped with numerous branched clusters of small lilac-purple flowers, creating a delicate haze of colour above the border.

The flowers are a particularly valuable source of nectar for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, making Verbena bonariensis an excellent choice for encouraging wildlife into the garden.

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Its tall, airy habit works particularly well towards the back or middle of a border, where it can add height and movement without blocking plants behind it.
