Rhododendron ‘Ponticum Variegatum’

Rhododendron ponticum ‘Variegatum’ is a striking evergreen shrub valued for its unusual variegated foliage and abundant spring flowers. It is an excellent choice for woodland-style gardens, mixed borders, containers and specimen planting.

The plant develops a dense, branching habit with attractive dark green, leathery leaves edged with a distinctive creamy-white margin. The contrasting foliage provides colour and structure throughout the year, making the plant particularly eye-catching even when it is not in flower.

In spring, the branches are covered with abundant trusses of mauve, funnel-shaped flowers, creating a beautiful display against the boldly variegated foliage.

Its dense habit and distinctive colouring make ‘Variegatum’ an excellent feature shrub, while it also works well alongside other acid-loving plants in woodland and informal planting schemes.

Plant in partial shade in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Ericaceous compost is recommended when planting, particularly in containers or where the existing soil is not naturally acidic. Avoid alkaline or lime-rich soils, as Rhododendrons require acidic conditions to thrive.

With its creamy-edged evergreen foliage and attractive mauve spring flowers, Rhododendron ponticum ‘Variegatum’ is a beautiful choice for adding year-round interest and seasonal colour to an acid-loving garden.
