Rhododendron ‘Elizabeth Red’ is a compact, bushy evergreen shrub valued for its striking foliage and vibrant late spring flowers. It is an excellent choice for mixed borders, woodland-style gardens, containers and specimen planting.
Growing to approximately 1.2 metres in height, it forms a neat, compact shape with attractive dark green and burgundy-toned foliage, providing colour and structure throughout the year.
In late spring, the plant produces abundant trusses of up to five funnel-shaped, bright red flowers, each reaching around 8cm in length. The vivid blooms create a striking contrast against the dark foliage and provide a beautiful seasonal display.
Its compact size makes ‘Elizabeth Red’ particularly useful for smaller gardens, containers and mixed borders, where its colourful flowers can be appreciated up close.
Plant in partial shade in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Ericaceous compost is required when planting in containers or where the existing soil is not naturally acidic. Avoid alkaline or lime-rich soils, as Rhododendrons need acidic conditions to thrive.
With its rich foliage, compact habit and brilliant red spring flowers, Rhododendron ‘Elizabeth Red’ is a striking choice for adding colour and year-round structure to an acid-loving garden.
