Sambucus nigra, commonly known as Elder, is a vigorous, bushy native deciduous shrub or small tree valued for its fragrant summer flowers, attractive berries and excellent wildlife benefits. It is an excellent choice for native hedging, woodland planting, wildlife gardens and naturalistic schemes.
The plant develops a large, bushy habit and can reach approximately 6 metres in height if left to grow naturally. Its attractive pinnate green leaves provide a fresh backdrop through the growing season before turning pale yellow in autumn.
In early summer, broad, flat sprays of fragrant cream-coloured flowers appear, creating an attractive display and providing an important source of nectar for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
The flowers are followed by clusters of small black berries, which provide valuable food for birds and other wildlife later in the year.
Elder is a hardy and adaptable native species that works particularly well in wildlife-friendly planting, informal hedges and naturalistic areas. It can also be pruned regularly to maintain a more compact, bushy shape.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. With its fragrant flowers, autumn colour and wildlife-friendly berries, Sambucus nigra is a valuable addition to a native or wildlife garden.
