Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Castlewellan’, commonly known as Golden Leylandii, is a vigorous, fast-growing evergreen conifer with a naturally upright, columnar habit. It is an excellent choice for hedging, screening, windbreaks and specimen planting.
Its flat sprays of golden-yellow foliage provide year-round colour, sometimes developing attractive bronze tones during colder weather. The bright foliage makes it a useful alternative to the traditional green Leylandii, particularly where a more colourful screen is wanted.
When grown as a hedge and regularly trimmed, ‘Castlewellan’ can create a dense, evergreen screen, making it particularly useful for privacy and boundary planting. If left untrimmed, it can develop into a large tree, so regular pruning is recommended where height and spread need to be controlled.
It can eventually reach 15 metres or more if left unpruned, making it best suited to larger spaces when grown as a specimen. For hedging, it can be maintained at a much more manageable height with regular clipping.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Its vigorous growth makes it a particularly useful choice where a fast-growing evergreen hedge or screen is required.
