Quercus rubra, commonly known as American Red Oak, is a fast-growing, large deciduous tree valued for its impressive size, broad rounded crown and spectacular autumn colour. Originally native to North America, it has become a popular ornamental and landscape tree in the UK.
It develops a strong, spreading form with a broad, rounded crown and attractive dark green leaves. The large, broad foliage provides a lush canopy through spring and summer before transforming in autumn into striking red, russet and rich brown shades.
American Red Oak can eventually become a large tree, making it best suited to larger gardens, parkland, woodland settings and open spaces where it has room to develop. Its fast growth makes it particularly useful when a substantial feature tree is required.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Hardy and adaptable, Quercus rubra is particularly valued for its strong form, rapid growth and outstanding autumn display.
With its impressive mature size and vivid seasonal colour, American Red Oak makes a striking specimen or landscape tree for larger spaces.
