Fagus Sylvatica (Green beech)

Fagus sylvatica, commonly known as Green Beech, is a versatile deciduous tree and popular hedging plant valued for its dense foliage, attractive autumn colour and ability to form a neat, formal hedge. Although technically deciduous, mature Beech hedges often retain their coppery-brown leaves through winter, providing excellent year-round screening.

The broad, elliptical leaves emerge bright green in spring and summer, before turning rich golden copper and brown in autumn. The dense branching habit makes Beech particularly effective for creating a strong, structured boundary.

When planted as a hedge and regularly trimmed, Green Beech can be maintained at a range of heights, making it ideal for formal hedging, privacy screening and defining garden boundaries. Left to grow naturally, it develops into a large, impressive tree, eventually reaching approximately 20–30 metres in height.

As a tree, it is best suited to larger gardens, woodland planting, parkland and open spaces where it has room to develop. As hedging, it is particularly effective for creating a traditional, formal appearance while still providing valuable shelter and habitat for wildlife.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Green Beech is a hardy and long-lived choice for both native-style and formal garden planting.
