Prunus spinosa, commonly known as Blackthorn, is a small, thorny deciduous native tree or shrub valued for its early spring blossom, dark foliage and distinctive black fruits. It is an excellent choice for native hedging, wildlife gardens, woodland planting and naturalistic schemes.
It develops a dense, branching habit with dark green, ovate leaves and thorny stems. In early spring, before the leaves fully emerge, the branches are covered with small white flowers, creating an attractive display and providing an important early source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.
The flowers are followed by rounded, blue-black fruits known as sloes, around 1.5cm across and covered with a characteristic powdery bloom. These provide a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife and can also be used to make traditional preserves and drinks.
Blackthorn can spread readily by producing suckers from both the roots and base of the plant. These can become invasive if left unchecked, so regular removal is advisable unless the aim is to create a dense, natural thicket.
Its thorny, dense growth makes it particularly effective for native hedging, boundaries and wildlife-friendly planting, providing shelter and nesting habitat for birds.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Hardy and adaptable, Blackthorn is an excellent native choice for creating a dense wildlife hedge with early spring blossom and autumn fruit.
This product contains a bundle of 25 plants.
