Prunus padus, commonly known as Bird Cherry, is a large, hardy deciduous native tree valued for its fragrant spring blossom, attractive autumn foliage and wildlife benefits. It is an excellent choice for woodland planting, native schemes, larger gardens, shelterbelts and landscape projects.
The tree develops a broad, spreading habit with attractive toothed, ovate green leaves, which turn warm yellow shades in autumn before falling.
In late spring, the branches are adorned with hanging racemes of fragrant white flowers, each around 1cm across. The abundant blossom is particularly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
The flowers are followed by small, bitter black fruits, which provide a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife later in the season.
Bird Cherry can develop into a large tree, making it best suited to areas where it has plenty of room to grow. Its attractive blossom and wildlife value make it particularly well suited to naturalistic and native planting schemes.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Hardy and adaptable, Prunus padus is a valuable native tree for providing spring colour, autumn interest and habitat for wildlife.
This product contains a bundle of 25 plants.
