Ligustrum ovalifolium, commonly known as Green Privet, is a vigorous, upright semi-evergreen or evergreen shrub and one of the most popular choices for traditional garden hedging. It is valued for its dense growth, glossy foliage and ability to respond well to regular clipping.
The shrub produces oval, glossy green leaves up to around 6cm long, creating a dense screen that provides good privacy and structure. Small, fragrant white flowers appear in dense clusters in midsummer, followed by rounded, shiny black berries in autumn.
If left untrimmed, Green Privet can reach approximately 4 metres in height, but it can easily be maintained as a formal hedge at a more manageable height with regular pruning.
It is particularly useful for boundary hedging, privacy screening, windbreaks and formal garden planting, and its vigorous growth means it can establish a dense hedge relatively quickly.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Hardy and adaptable, Green Privet is a reliable choice for creating a dense, easily maintained hedge with year-round structure.
The fragrant summer flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, while the autumn berries can provide food for birds.
