Alnus glutinosa, commonly known as Common Alder, is a large, fast-growing native British deciduous tree. It can be grown as a specimen or landscape tree, but is also a useful choice for creating native hedging, screening and mixed woodland planting.
When young, Common Alder has a broadly conical shape, developing into a large, rounded tree as it matures. The rounded, bright green leaves provide a fresh display through spring and summer before falling in autumn. Grey-purple buds and developing catkins are particularly noticeable in winter, providing additional seasonal interest.
Common Alder can eventually reach up to 25 metres in height, making it best suited to larger gardens, farms, estates, woodland areas and landscape planting. It is particularly useful for planting in damp or wet ground, including alongside ponds, streams and other areas where many trees may struggle.
As a native tree, Alder is also a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly planting schemes, providing food and shelter for a range of insects and birds.
This product contains a bundle of 25 plants.
