Ilex × altaclerensis ‘Golden King’, commonly known as Golden King Holly, is a compact, bushy evergreen shrub valued for its bold variegated foliage. It is an excellent choice for specimen planting, mixed borders, evergreen screening, hedging and containers.

The broad, glossy green leaves are edged with bright golden-yellow margins, creating a striking contrast and providing colour throughout the year. The foliage is generally less spiny than that of many common Holly varieties, making it useful for garden planting where a softer appearance is preferred.

Small white flowers are produced in early summer, followed by attractive reddish-brown berries in autumn and winter on suitable pollinated plants. These provide additional seasonal interest and can be enjoyed by garden wildlife.

‘Golden King’ can grow to approximately 3–5 metres in height if left unpruned, but it responds well to clipping and can be maintained at a smaller size. It works particularly well as an evergreen feature shrub, informal hedge or screening plant.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Its year-round variegated foliage and compact, bushy habit make it a useful choice for adding evergreen colour and structure to both traditional and contemporary gardens.
