Rhododendron yakushimanum ‘Barbarella’ is a stunning, compact evergreen shrub valued for its spreading habit, attractive foliage and masses of colourful late spring flowers. It is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, mixed borders, containers, woodland-style gardens and specimen planting.
Growing to approximately 60cm in height, ‘Barbarella’ forms a neat, spreading shape with slightly glossy green leaves, providing year-round colour and structure.
In late spring, the plant produces masses of clusters, each carrying around 6–8 bell-shaped, rich pink flowers with distinctive creamy-yellow throats. The contrast between the vibrant pink petals and pale centres creates a beautiful and eye-catching display.
Its compact size makes ‘Barbarella’ particularly useful for smaller spaces and containers, where its low-growing habit and abundant flowers can be appreciated up close.
Plant in partial shade in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Ericaceous compost is recommended when planting to provide the acidic conditions this Rhododendron needs, particularly in containers or where the existing soil is not naturally acidic. Avoid alkaline or lime-rich soils.
With its compact spreading form, attractive evergreen foliage and masses of rich pink flowers, Rhododendron yakushimanum ‘Barbarella’ is a lovely choice for adding colour and year-round interest to an acid-loving garden.
