Rhododendron ‘Saffrano’ is a slow-growing, compact evergreen shrub valued for its glossy foliage and unusual, warm-coloured spring flowers. It is an excellent choice for mixed borders, woodland-style gardens, containers and specimen planting.
Growing to approximately 1.2 metres in height, ‘Saffrano’ develops a dense, slightly spreading habit with attractive glossy green leaves, providing year-round colour and structure.
From mid spring, the plant produces multiple tight clusters of funnel-shaped, light yellow flowers with attractive wavy edges. The blooms open from distinctive orange-coloured buds, creating a beautiful contrast and a warm, vibrant display.
Its compact size and slightly spreading habit make ‘Saffrano’ particularly useful for smaller gardens, containers and mixed acid-loving borders, where its unusual flowers can be enjoyed up close.
Plant in partial shade in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Ericaceous compost should be used when planting, particularly in containers or where the existing soil is not naturally acidic. Avoid alkaline or lime-rich soils, as Rhododendrons require acidic conditions to thrive.
With its glossy evergreen foliage, colourful orange buds and delicate yellow flowers, Rhododendron ‘Saffrano’ is a lovely choice for adding year-round structure and warm spring colour to an acid-loving garden.
