Pennisetum ‘Alopecuroides’ (Chinese Fountain Grass)

Pennisetum alopecuroides, commonly known as Chinese Fountain Grass, is a graceful, clump-forming deciduous ornamental grass valued for its soft, bottlebrush-like flower heads and attractive arching foliage. It is an excellent choice for mixed borders, cottage gardens, gravel gardens, prairie planting and containers.

The plant forms a dense clump of narrow green leaves, with foliage reaching around 60cm in length. As temperatures fall, the leaves turn attractive pale brown, providing texture and structure into the winter months.

From late summer into early autumn, tall stems rise above the foliage carrying elegant, softly hairy oblong flower heads, which range from green to attractive purple shades. These gradually develop a soft, fluffy appearance, creating movement and interest in the garden.

Its rounded habit and gently arching foliage make it particularly effective when planted in groups or towards the middle of a border, where the flower heads can catch the light and move gracefully in the breeze.

Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Cut back the old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

With its soft foliage, distinctive flower heads and long season of interest, Pennisetum alopecuroides is an excellent choice for adding texture, movement and structure to the garden.
