Rhamnus cathartica, commonly known as Buckthorn, is a dense, thicket-forming deciduous shrub or small tree valued for its wildlife benefits and useful dense growth. It is an excellent choice for native hedging, wildlife planting, woodland edges and naturalistic schemes.
It develops a dense, branching habit and can reach approximately 6 metres in height, with spiny shoots carrying glossy dark green leaves. In autumn, the foliage turns attractive yellow shades before falling.
Small clusters of inconspicuous yellowish-green flowers appear in late spring and early summer, followed by attractive berries which begin red before ripening to black in autumn. The fruits provide a useful food source for birds and other wildlife.
Its naturally dense and thorny growth makes Buckthorn particularly useful for creating wildlife-friendly hedges and impenetrable thickets, providing valuable shelter and nesting opportunities for birds.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Hardy and adaptable, Rhamnus cathartica is well suited to native and naturalistic planting schemes where its dense habit and wildlife value can be appreciated.
This product contains a bundle of 25 plants.
