Cornus sanguinea, commonly known as Common Dogwood, is a hardy, native British deciduous shrub valued for its colourful young stems, autumn foliage and wildlife-friendly flowers and berries. It is an excellent choice for native hedging, screening, wildlife gardens, woodland planting and informal borders.
This upright shrub can reach approximately 2–3 metres in height, making it useful for creating natural boundaries and screening. Young shoots are reddish-green in winter, providing valuable colour and structure after the leaves have fallen.
The ovate, mid-green leaves turn deep red in autumn, creating a strong seasonal display. In summer, small white flowers are produced in flat clusters, followed by black berries which provide a valuable food source for birds.
Common Dogwood can be planted as part of a mixed native hedge, used for informal screening or grown as a standalone shrub in wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Regular pruning can also encourage fresh young stems and stronger winter colour.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. It is a hardy and adaptable native shrub, well suited to a wide range of UK growing conditions.
This product contains a bundle of 25 plants.
