Pinus sylvestris, commonly known as Scots Pine, is a large, hardy native evergreen conifer valued for its distinctive bark, blue-green foliage and strong, architectural form. It is an excellent choice for larger gardens, woodland planting, shelterbelts, wildlife gardens and landscape schemes.
This fast-growing pine develops a tall, strong trunk and an attractive crown that becomes more irregular with age. One of its most distinctive features is the orange-red, scaly bark on the upper trunk and branches, which provides striking colour and interest throughout the year.
The twisted, blue-green needles are held in pairs and provide dense evergreen foliage. The tree also produces cones up to around 5cm long, adding further seasonal interest.
Scots Pine can eventually reach approximately 20–25 metres in height, making it best suited to larger gardens and open spaces where it has plenty of room to develop. Its dense growth provides valuable shelter and habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Hardy and adaptable, Scots Pine is a particularly good choice for native and naturalistic planting schemes, providing year-round structure and distinctive colour.
