Rhododendron yakushimanum ‘Dopey’ is a compact, upright evergreen shrub valued for its attractive foliage and impressive display of bright red spring flowers. It is an excellent choice for mixed borders, woodland-style gardens, containers and specimen planting.
Growing to approximately 2 metres in height, ‘Dopey’ develops a neat, upright habit with attractive mid-green foliage, providing year-round colour and structure.
In late spring, the plant produces full, rounded trusses of deep, bright red flowers. The blooms gradually soften slightly towards the edges, creating a striking two-tone effect against the green foliage.
Its compact upright form makes ‘Dopey’ a versatile choice for a range of garden settings, working particularly well as a feature shrub or planted amongst other acid-loving plants.
Plant in partial shade in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Ericaceous compost should be used when planting to provide the acidic conditions this Rhododendron needs, particularly in containers or where the existing soil is not naturally acidic. Avoid alkaline or lime-rich soils.
With its attractive evergreen foliage and spectacular deep red spring flowers, Rhododendron yakushimanum ‘Dopey’ makes a bold and colourful addition to the garden.
