Geranium sanguineum ‘New Hampshire Purple’, commonly known as Cranesbill, is a compact, mound-forming flowering perennial valued for its profusion of deep pink flowers and attractive autumn foliage. It is an excellent choice for front-of-border planting, rockeries, cottage gardens, ground cover and containers.
It forms a low, spreading mound of deeply divided, lobed green foliage, reaching approximately 25cm in height and 30cm across. From late spring through summer, the foliage is covered with saucer-shaped deep pink flowers, each marked with slightly darker veins.
After flowering, the foliage develops attractive red shades in autumn, extending the plant’s seasonal interest beyond its main flowering period.
Its compact, spreading habit makes it particularly useful for the front of borders, edging paths and filling gaps between other plants. It also works well planted in groups to create a low-growing carpet of colour.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Hardy and relatively low maintenance once established, it is particularly useful for rockeries, cottage gardens and informal planting schemes.
The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, making it a useful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.
