Dicentra Spectabilis

£5.00

Dicentra spectabilis, commonly known as Bleeding Heart, is a graceful, clump-forming herbaceous perennial valued for its distinctive heart-shaped flowers and attractive foliage. It is an excellent choice for cottage gardens, woodland borders, shaded areas and informal planting schemes.

The plant forms a mound of fleshy, finely divided mid-green foliage, with individual leaves reaching up to around 40cm long. In late spring and early summer, elegant arching stems carry rows of distinctive heart-shaped flowers, which can range from rose-red and pink to white.

Growing to approximately 90cm–1m in height, Bleeding Heart is particularly effective in the middle of a flower border, where its arching flower stems can be appreciated above lower-growing plants. It also works beautifully beneath trees and amongst other woodland-style perennials.

Plant in partial shade or dappled shade in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. It is a hardy perennial and is particularly useful for bringing colour and interest to areas of the garden where full sun is limited.

The unusual heart-shaped flowers make it a popular choice for cottage and woodland gardens, while its early summer flowering period provides valuable colour before many later-season perennials come into bloom.
