Prunus × subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’, commonly known as Winter-Flowering Cherry, is an elegant, small deciduous ornamental tree valued for its delicate white flowers and attractive autumn foliage. It is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, lawns, mixed borders and specimen planting.
The tree develops a graceful, spreading habit with attractive ovate green leaves, which turn yellow in autumn before falling.
Its most distinctive feature is its unusual flowering period. From late autumn through winter and into early spring, it produces semi-double white flowers, around 1.5cm across, often flowering in succession during mild periods. This makes it a valuable source of colour when little else is in flower.
Its relatively compact size and graceful shape make ‘Autumnalis’ an excellent feature or specimen tree, particularly when planted near a path, patio or seating area where its winter flowers can be appreciated.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. With its unusual winter flowering period and attractive autumn colour, Prunus ‘Autumnalis’ provides seasonal interest for much of the year.
