Catalpa bignonioides, commonly known as the Indian Bean Tree, is a striking ornamental and specimen tree valued for its exceptionally large leaves and spectacular summer flowers. It makes an impressive feature tree for larger gardens, lawns and open spaces.
This deciduous tree develops a broad, rounded crown with very large, pale green, heart-shaped leaves, creating a bold and tropical appearance during the growing season.
In summer, it produces abundant clusters of beautiful white, orchid-like flowers, each marked with purple and yellow, creating a spectacular display against the large foliage. Long, bean-like seed pods can develop after flowering, giving the tree additional seasonal interest.
Catalpa bignonioides can eventually reach approximately 15–20 metres in height, with a broad spread, so it is best suited to larger gardens, parkland and open landscape planting where it has room to develop.
Its dramatic foliage and showy flowers make it particularly effective as a specimen or feature tree, where it can provide a strong focal point and architectural interest.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. A sheltered position is preferable, particularly in colder areas.
