Magnolia ‘Butterflies’

Magnolia ‘Butterflies’ is a beautiful deciduous ornamental tree, grown for its unusual creamy yellow flowers and impressive spring display. It is an excellent choice for specimen planting, lawns, mixed borders and gardens where a softer, more unusual flower colour is wanted.

It develops an upright, pyramidal habit when young, becoming broader as it matures, and can eventually reach approximately 4–6 metres in height. Its attractive green foliage follows the flowers and provides a fresh backdrop throughout the summer months.

In mid-spring, upright buds open into elegant, cup-shaped flowers with numerous creamy yellow petals. The flowers are produced on the bare branches before the foliage fully emerges, allowing their distinctive colour and shape to really stand out.

Its relatively compact size and upright growth make ‘Butterflies’ a versatile magnolia for medium-sized gardens, where it works particularly well as a standalone specimen or as a feature within a larger mixed border.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. A sheltered position is preferable to help protect the spring flowers from strong winds and late frosts.

With its distinctive yellow flowers, attractive form and fresh summer foliage, Magnolia ‘Butterflies’ makes an eye-catching ornamental tree and a lovely choice for bringing something a little different to the spring garden.
