Photinia × fraseri ‘Carré Rouge’, commonly known as Red Robin, is a compact, upright evergreen shrub valued for its brilliant red young foliage and year-round structure. It is an excellent choice for hedging, screening, mixed borders and specimen planting.
The plant develops a neat, erect habit and can reach approximately 2–2.5 metres in height, with glossy, lance-shaped leaves. New growth emerges in a striking bright red, gradually maturing to dark green as the season progresses, creating an attractive contrast between the young and older foliage.
In spring, upright panicles of small creamy-white flowers appear, adding further seasonal interest and attracting pollinating insects.
‘Carré Rouge’ responds well to regular pruning, making it particularly useful for creating a dense evergreen hedge or screen. It can also be grown as a feature shrub within a mixed border, where its colourful new growth provides a strong focal point.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Its combination of evergreen foliage, vibrant red new growth and compact habit makes it a versatile choice for adding colour, structure and privacy to the garden.
