Betula Pendula (Silver Birch)

Betula pendula, commonly known as Silver Birch, is an elegant, fast-growing native ornamental and specimen tree with a distinctive slender shape and attractive white bark. It is an excellent choice for larger gardens, lawns, woodland planting, avenues and naturalistic landscapes.

This deciduous tree develops a graceful, narrowly conical crown with slender, drooping twigs. Its most recognisable feature is its peeling white bark, which develops darker, black and rugged bark towards the base as the tree matures.

The diamond-shaped, toothed leaves are mid-green through spring and summer before turning bright yellow in autumn. Yellow-brown catkins appear in early spring, providing additional seasonal interest.

Silver Birch can reach approximately 20–25 metres in height, with a relatively narrow spread, making it particularly effective where height and vertical structure are required without an excessively broad crown.

A versatile specimen and landscape tree, it works particularly well planted individually on lawns, in groups, along avenues or as part of native and woodland-style planting. It is also a valuable choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, supporting a wide range of insects and birds.
