Prunus avium, commonly known as Wild Cherry, is a beautiful, spreading deciduous native tree valued for its spring blossom, colourful foliage and attractive red-purple fruit. It is an excellent choice for larger gardens, woodland planting, lawns and wildlife-friendly landscapes.
The tree develops a broad, spreading crown with attractive leaves that emerge with a bronze tinge, maturing to dark green through summer. In autumn, the foliage develops vibrant orange and red shades, providing a spectacular seasonal display.
In late spring, the branches are covered with nodding clusters of pure white flowers, around 2.5cm across. The blossom provides an important source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.
The flowers are followed by small, shiny red-purple cherries, which provide valuable food for birds and other wildlife and add further interest later in the season.
Growing into a large tree, Wild Cherry is best suited to larger gardens and open spaces where it has room to develop. Many cultivated varieties of ornamental and fruiting cherry have been bred from this species.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. With its beautiful spring blossom, colourful autumn foliage and wildlife-friendly fruit, Prunus avium is a superb choice for adding seasonal interest and natural character to the garden.
