Acer campestre, commonly known as Field Maple, is a native British deciduous tree and an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, hedging, screening and larger garden spaces. It forms a compact, bushy crown and provides attractive foliage and seasonal interest throughout the year.
The leaves have five rounded lobes and are green through spring and summer, before turning shades of yellow and red in autumn. Small green flowers appear in spring, followed by the distinctive winged fruits typical of maple trees.
As a mature tree, Field Maple can reach over 12 metres in height, with a spread of approximately 4–8 metres, so it is best suited to larger gardens, open spaces and landscape planting.
Field Maple is particularly versatile and can be used as a specimen tree, native hedging plant, screening tree or woodland-style planting. As a native species, it is also a valuable choice for attracting and supporting wildlife in the garden.
