Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel)

Prunus lusitanica, commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, is a dense, bushy evergreen shrub valued for its glossy foliage, fragrant summer flowers and attractive dark fruits. It is an excellent choice for hedging, screening, privacy planting and specimen shrubs.

It develops a naturally upright, bushy habit with attractive deep green, ovate leaves, providing reliable colour and structure throughout the year. Its dense foliage makes it particularly effective for creating a private garden boundary or evergreen screen.

In early summer, slender clusters of small white, scented flowers appear amongst the foliage. These are followed by dark purple fruits, which add further seasonal interest and can provide food for birds.

Portuguese Laurel responds well to regular pruning, making it suitable for maintaining a neat, dense formal hedge, while it can also be allowed to grow naturally as a large evergreen shrub.
