Pyrus Silver Sail (Ornamental Pear)

Pyrus ‘Silver Sail’ is a small, attractive deciduous ornamental tree valued for its silvery foliage, showy white spring blossom and colourful autumn fruit. It is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, lawns, mixed borders and specimen planting.

Growing to approximately 5 metres in height, this compact tree develops a neat habit with attractive downy young shoots and narrow, silvery-green leaves. The leaves are covered in fine hairs, particularly on their undersides, giving the tree a soft, silvery appearance throughout the growing season.

In spring, the branches carry clusters of large white flowers, around 3cm across, with distinctive red anthers at their centres. These create a striking contrast against the silver-toned foliage and provide a valuable source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.

The flowers are followed in autumn by rounded yellow-green ornamental fruits, up to around 2cm across, adding further seasonal interest after the summer foliage has matured.

Its relatively small size and attractive silver colouring make ‘Silver Sail’ particularly effective as a feature or specimen tree, where its unusual foliage and blossom can be appreciated.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. With its silvery foliage, large white flowers and decorative autumn fruit, Pyrus ‘Silver Sail’ is a distinctive choice for adding colour, texture and seasonal interest to the garden.
