Magnolia stellata ‘Waterlily’ is a slow-growing, compact deciduous shrub or small tree with an upright to pyramidal habit. It is valued for its large, fragrant white flowers and slightly later flowering period, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, mixed borders and specimen planting.
Growing to approximately 3 metres in height, ‘Waterlily’ develops a neat, upright shape with narrowly oval green leaves that provide attractive summer foliage.
In spring, before the leaves emerge, it produces large, highly fragrant white flowers with up to 32 narrow petals, creating a beautiful, full display. This cultivar typically flowers around one week later than the standard species, which can help extend the Magnolia flowering season.
Its slow growth and compact size make ‘Waterlily’ particularly useful for smaller gardens, courtyards and feature planting, where its spring flowers can be enjoyed up close.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. A sheltered position is preferable to protect the early flowers from strong winds and late frosts.
With its elegant form, fragrant flowers and later flowering period, Magnolia ‘Waterlily’ makes a beautiful spring focal point in the garden.
