Pinus nigra, commonly known as Austrian Pine, is a large, hardy evergreen conifer valued for its dense foliage and strong, architectural form. It is an excellent choice for larger gardens, woodland planting, shelterbelts, screening and landscape schemes.
The tree develops a dense, irregular crown as it matures, with strong branches carrying dark green needles in pairs, reaching up to around 12cm in length. Its evergreen foliage provides colour and structure throughout the year.
Mature trees produce ovoid cones, which develop a pale brown colour as they ripen, adding further interest to the branches.
Austrian Pine can eventually reach approximately 20–25 metres in height, making it best suited to larger gardens and open spaces where it has plenty of room to develop. Its dense growth also makes it useful where wind protection and screening are required.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. It is a particularly hardy and adaptable conifer, tolerating exposed conditions and a range of soil types once established.
With its dense dark green foliage and impressive mature form, Austrian Pine makes a strong evergreen feature tree for larger gardens and landscape planting.
