Fagus Sylvatica Purpurea (Copper/Red Beech)

Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea’, commonly known as Copper Beech or Red Beech, is a large deciduous specimen and ornamental tree grown for its distinctive deep purple foliage. It is an excellent choice for large gardens, parkland, avenues, woodland planting and landscape schemes.

The tree develops the characteristic strong structure and spreading crown of Beech, with young leaves emerging in rich deep purple-red shades. The foliage remains dark throughout the summer before developing attractive reddish-copper tones in autumn.

If left to mature naturally, Copper Beech can eventually reach approximately 25–30 metres in height, making it best suited to larger gardens and open spaces where it has plenty of room to develop.

It is particularly effective as a specimen or feature tree, where its dark foliage provides a striking contrast against green-leaved trees and shrubs. It can also be used for avenues and formal landscape planting.

‘Purpurea’ is generally seed-raised, so the exact depth and intensity of the purple foliage can vary between individual trees, giving each specimen its own character.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. A hardy and long-lived tree, Copper Beech makes an impressive focal point in larger UK gardens.
