Euonymus europaeus, commonly known as Spindle, is a hardy native British deciduous shrub or small tree valued for its vibrant autumn colour and distinctive pink fruits. It is an excellent choice for native hedging, wildlife gardens, woodland planting, informal screening and mixed borders.
This vigorous, spreading plant can grow to approximately 3 metres in height, developing into a rounded shrub or small multi-stemmed tree. The narrowly ovate green leaves turn striking shades of pink and red in autumn, providing excellent seasonal colour.
Small greenish-white flowers appear in spring and early summer, followed by distinctive four-lobed pink fruits. As the fruits mature, they split open to reveal bright orange seeds, creating one of the plant’s most recognisable features.
Spindle is particularly useful in native and wildlife-friendly planting, with its flowers providing nectar for insects and its fruits offering food for birds.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Its compact mature size makes it suitable for smaller landscape schemes than many native trees, while its dense growth can also be used for informal hedging and screening.
