Corylus Avellana (Hazel)

Corylus avellana, commonly known as Hazel, is a versatile native British deciduous shrub or small multi-stemmed tree valued for its catkins, edible nuts and wildlife benefits. It is an excellent choice for native hedging, screening, woodland planting, wildlife gardens and informal borders.

Hazel typically grows to around 5–6 metres in height, developing a rounded, bushy shape with multiple stems. Its rounded, mid-green leaves provide a fresh display through spring and summer before turning yellow in autumn.

In early spring, Hazel produces distinctive yellow male catkins, up to around 6cm long, which appear before the leaves. These are followed by clusters of edible hazelnuts, which ripen in autumn and are an important food source for wildlife.

Hazel is particularly useful as a native hedging plant, where it can be regularly coppiced or trimmed to encourage dense, vigorous growth. Left to develop naturally, it makes an attractive multi-stemmed shrub or small tree.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. A hardy and adaptable native plant, Hazel is particularly well suited to woodland and naturalistic planting schemes and provides valuable habitat and food for a wide range of wildlife.
