Salix alba, commonly known as White Willow, is a large, fast-growing deciduous native tree valued for its elegant silvery foliage and impressive mature form. It is an excellent choice for larger gardens, woodland planting, damp areas, wildlife gardens and naturalistic landscape schemes.
The tree can reach approximately 25 metres in height, developing a strong trunk with distinctive dark grey, deeply furrowed bark as it matures. Its long, narrow, pointed leaves grow to around 10cm in length and are dull green on top with blue-green, silky undersides. This fine texture gives the foliage a beautiful silvery-white appearance from a distance, particularly when caught by the light or moving in the breeze.
In spring, catkins around 4–6cm long appear alongside the emerging leaves, adding further seasonal interest and providing an early source of food for pollinating insects.
White Willow is particularly well suited to moist or wet soils and is a valuable tree for wildlife, providing shelter and habitat for a wide range of species.
Plant in full sun or partial shade, ideally in moist, fertile soil with plenty of space for the tree to develop. Its impressive size and spreading nature make it best suited to larger gardens and open spaces.
With its distinctive silvery foliage, textured bark and strong wildlife value, Salix alba is an excellent choice for adding height, movement and natural character to the landscape.
