Larix decidua (European larch)

Larix decidua, commonly known as European Larch, is a distinctive deciduous conifer that combines the form of an evergreen with the seasonal changes of a deciduous tree. It is an excellent choice for larger gardens, woodland planting, parkland and specimen planting.

It develops a strong, conical shape, with attractive cream-coloured young shoots and soft, light green needle-like foliage. Unlike most conifers, European Larch sheds its needles each autumn, turning a beautiful golden yellow before they fall.

Growing into a large tree, it can eventually reach approximately 25–30 metres in height, making it best suited to larger gardens and open spaces where it has plenty of room to develop.

Its changing appearance throughout the seasons makes it an attractive feature or specimen tree, while its open, conical form works particularly well in woodland and naturalistic planting schemes.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. A hardy and long-lived tree, European Larch is well suited to the UK climate and provides year-round structural interest with a particularly striking autumn display.
