Quercus petraea, commonly known as Sessile Oak, is a large, long-lived deciduous native tree valued for its impressive size, broad crown and importance to wildlife. It is an excellent choice for woodland planting, native landscapes, larger gardens and habitat creation.
The tree develops a broad, rounded crown with sturdy branches and attractive, leathery dark green lobed leaves, which can reach around 15cm in length. In autumn, the foliage turns attractive orange-brown shades before falling.
In spring, small, inconspicuous yellowish flowers appear in catkins alongside the young leaves. These are followed by acorns, which provide an important food source for a wide range of wildlife, particularly birds and small mammals.
Sessile Oak can eventually develop into a very large tree, so it is best suited to larger gardens, estates and open spaces where it has plenty of room to mature. As a native species, it provides valuable habitat, shelter and food for wildlife.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Hardy and adaptable, Sessile Oak is an excellent choice for naturalistic and native planting schemes, offering year-round structure and exceptional wildlife value.
This product contains a bundle of 25 plants.
