Prunus ‘Tai Haku’, commonly known as Great White Cherry, is a magnificent deciduous flowering cherry valued for its broad spreading habit, colourful young foliage and large white spring flowers. It is an excellent choice for lawns, larger gardens, avenues and specimen planting.
The tree develops a broad, spreading crown, with young leaves emerging in striking deep bronze-red shades before maturing to green. The large leaves can reach around 15cm in length, creating a lush canopy through the summer.
In spring, the branches are covered with impressive pure white, single flowers, reaching up to around 6cm across. The large, showy blooms create a spectacular display against the emerging bronze foliage and provide a valuable source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.
Its broad habit makes ‘Tai Haku’ particularly effective as a feature or specimen tree, where there is sufficient space for the crown to develop naturally.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. With its dramatic white blossom, bronze young foliage and attractive spreading form, Prunus ‘Tai Haku’ is a classic choice for creating a striking spring focal point.
