Castanea Sativa (Sweet Chestnut)

Castanea sativa, commonly known as Sweet Chestnut, is a large, vigorous deciduous tree that can also be used as a hedging plant when young and regularly managed. It is an excellent choice for woodland planting, large gardens, estates, screening and native-style hedging.

The tree develops a strong, rugged trunk with deeply grooved, grey-brown bark and a broad, spreading crown as it matures. Its glossy, dark green leaves are long and lance-shaped, with prominent serrated edges, reaching up to around 20cm in length.

In summer, long yellowish male catkins, up to 15cm long, appear, followed by the familiar spiny fruits containing the edible sweet chestnuts in autumn. The nuts provide an attractive seasonal feature and are also valuable to wildlife.

A mature Sweet Chestnut can reach approximately 20–30 metres in height, making it best suited to larger gardens, woodland, parkland and estate planting where it has plenty of room to develop.

When planted closely and managed appropriately, young Sweet Chestnut can also be used as a native hedging or screening plant, creating a strong and long-lasting boundary.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. A hardy and vigorous tree, Sweet Chestnut is particularly effective in woodland and naturalistic planting schemes.
