Magnolia Stellata x Lili ‘Susan’

Magnolia × stellata ‘Susan’ is a compact, deciduous ornamental shrub or small tree valued for its striking deep red-purple flowers and compact habit. It is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, mixed borders, courtyards and specimen planting.

Growing to approximately 3–4 metres in height, ‘Susan’ develops a neat, upright to rounded shape with attractive oval, mid-green leaves up to around 15cm long.

In mid spring, deep reddish-purple buds open to reveal elegant, fragrant, cupped flowers. The flowers are typically made up of six tepals, with a rich deep red-purple exterior and softer pink interior, creating a beautiful two-tone effect.

The flowers appear around the time the young foliage begins to emerge, providing a spectacular display before the tree becomes fully leafed.

Its relatively compact size makes ‘Susan’ particularly useful where a Magnolia is wanted but space is limited. It works beautifully as a feature shrub or small specimen tree in a mixed border or lawn.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. A sheltered position is preferable to protect the flowers from strong winds and late frosts.

With its fragrant, richly coloured spring flowers and manageable size, Magnolia ‘Susan’ is a popular choice for adding a dramatic focal point to smaller gardens.
