Magnolia x Genie

Magnolia ‘Genie’ is a compact deciduous ornamental tree, grown for its striking deep burgundy-purple flowers and impressive spring display. It is an excellent choice for specimen planting, lawns, mixed borders and smaller gardens where a more compact magnolia is required.

It develops an upright, compact habit and can eventually reach approximately 3–4 metres in height, making it particularly useful where space is more limited. Its attractive green foliage provides interest throughout the summer and forms a good backdrop to the richly coloured flowers.

In spring, dark buds open into beautiful, tulip-shaped flowers in rich burgundy-purple shades. The flowers appear on the bare branches before or alongside the emerging foliage, creating a dramatic contrast and making ‘Genie’ a real focal point in the garden. Established plants may also produce further flowers later in the season.

Its relatively compact size makes it a versatile choice for smaller gardens, while still providing the impact and character of a larger flowering magnolia. It works particularly well as a standalone specimen or towards the back of a mixed border.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. A sheltered position is preferable to help protect the flowers from strong winds and late spring frosts.

With its compact habit, distinctive dark flowers and beautiful spring display, Magnolia ‘Genie’ is an excellent ornamental tree for adding rich colour and year-round structure to the garden.
