Euonymus japonicus ‘Jean Hughes’ is a dense, upright evergreen shrub and an excellent alternative to Box (Buxus) for low hedging and formal planting. Its compact habit and glossy foliage make it particularly useful for border edging, pathways, formal gardens and containers.
It forms a neat, bushy plant with glossy dark green, toothed ovate leaves, providing year-round colour and structure. Small pale green flowers may appear in summer and can occasionally be followed by attractive fruits in autumn.
Growing to approximately 1–1.5 metres in height and spread if left untrimmed, ‘Jean Hughes’ responds well to regular clipping and can be maintained as a neat, dense low hedge. It is particularly useful for defining borders, pathways and formal planting areas.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. It is hardy, evergreen and easy to maintain, making it a practical choice where you want the look of a traditional clipped hedge without using Box.
Its dense evergreen foliage and tolerance of regular pruning make Euonymus ‘Jean Hughes’ a popular Box alternative for formal hedging and garden edging.
