As the days get cooler as we approach chilly season, it is the perfect time to plan your autumn hedging. Planting hedges in the cooler months gives roots a chance to settle in before the growing season.
Looking to replace an existing hedge or simply have a new project on the go?
Here are our suggestions for hedging you can include into your garden.
1. Section off a border
For a neat and tidy way to divide up your garden, Box (Buxus Sempervirens) or Yew (Taxus Baccata) hedging is ideal. These both clip beautifully into shape, giving you a smart, low boundary that frames flower beds or pathways. Other options include Ilex Crenata (Box Holly) or Euonymus Japonicus ‘Jean Hughes’, both fantastic alternatives to box with small, glossy leaves and excellent resistance to disease.
2. Create shade & shelter
For a splash of colour as well as cover, Red Robin (Photinia × Fraseri ‘Red Robin’) is a brilliant choice. Its striking red and glossy green leaves, and its dense foliage provides excellent shade and wind protection around seating areas or patios. Other great options include Griselinia Littoralis (New Zealand Broadleaf), with its fresh apple-green leaves, or Variegated Privet (Ligustrum Ovalifolium ‘Aureum’), which adds a lighter, decorative touch to your garden.
3. Hide from the neighbours
If you’d like a fast-growing hedge that offers privacy and year-round greenery, Laurel (Prunus Laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’) is ideal. With its broad, glossy leaves and dense habit, it creates an instant screen, especially if bought in root-balled variation. The perfect way to block out your neighbour! Other options include Leylandii (Cupressocyparis Leylandii) for rapid height and density, or Portuguese Laurel (Prunus Lusitanica) for a more refined, elegant look.
