You may think January is a quiet month for garden jobs. But there’s actually a lot you can do now to get ready for the year ahead.
Still got that broken tool that you will need to use in spring? Don’t leave it until the minute you need it. Repair and replace any broken tools, fences, sheds. Get your garden looking fresh and clean, ready to add beautiful colours and textures in a few months.
Blustery winter winds can rock larger trees and newly planted hedges. A cane and tie ensures the plant is stable and allows the roots to establish without being disturbed. Make sure you tighten or replace any loose stakes and ties to get your plants thriving.
It’s a great time to prep your beds and borders. Clear away any weeds, add some fresh nutrients and rotavate the soil. Think about your plan for the year ahead. What new ideas or plants are you bringing to your garden?
January is fantastic for planting trees and hedging while the plants are fully dormant. They will establish brilliantly when planted now, roots will settle in over winter and will burst into growth come spring. It’s also your last chance to plant bulbs if you want some colour in the upcoming months
