Well, here’s our trusted hedging spacing guide to help you once you’ve measured up!
Double Stagged Row
The below varieties we recommend planting in a double staggered row. With a total of 6 plants per metre. See diagram below. 33cm between plants in the same row. 40cm between the 2 rows.
English hedging grants require 6 plants per metre. Some Welsh grants are 7 plants per metre.
Eg. BN11 mixes and the following: Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Field Maple, Hazel, other mixed shrubs

Single Straight Row
If the plants mentioned above are larger than 150cm tall, we recommend planting them 4 plants per metre in a single straight row. 20cm between plants in the row
The below varieties we recommend planting 5 plants per metre in a single row.
Beech, Hornbeam, Privet, Holly

Evergreen Varieties (Potted & Root balls)
For example, Laurel, Yew, Lusitanica, Red Robin, Leylandii, Privet
For an eventual height when clipped and maintained once a year, of anything below 2 metres tall. We recommend 3 plants per metre in a single row. 33cm between the plants in the row

For an eventual height bigger than 2m then we recommend 2 plants per metre. 50cm between plants in the row

Small border hedging
To section off a border or area of your garden using any of the following varieties, Box, Jean Hughes, Ilex Crenata. We recommend planting these at 4 plants per metre in a single row. 25cm between plants in the row
