Carpinus Betulus (Hornbeam)

Carpinus betulus, commonly known as Hornbeam, is a versatile native British deciduous tree that can be grown as either a tree or hedging plant. It is an excellent choice for native hedging, screening, woodland planting, avenues and larger gardens.

As a tree, Hornbeam develops a strong, fluted grey trunk and a dense, naturally attractive crown. The ovate leaves are around 5–8cm long with prominent ribs and turn yellow in autumn, providing good seasonal colour. Spring catkins are followed by distinctive hop-like fruiting catkins up to 8cm long.

As a mature tree, Hornbeam can reach approximately 15–25 metres in height, making it best suited to larger gardens, woodland and landscape planting. When regularly clipped, however, it makes an excellent dense native hedge, providing an attractive boundary and useful screening.

Hornbeam is particularly valuable for formal or informal hedging, as its dense growth responds well to regular trimming. Although deciduous, it can retain some of its dry brown leaves through winter, helping to maintain privacy during the colder months.

Plant in full sun or partial shade. A hardy and adaptable native tree, Hornbeam is well suited to a wide range of UK growing conditions and is particularly effective in woodland, naturalistic and wildlife-friendly planting schemes.
